The US FDA recently banned the import of certain fish species from China because of possible food contamination with drugs and unsafe food additives. In response to these concerns, Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed a LC-MS/MS method using reaction monitoring to detect nitrofuran metabolites which are veterinary anitbiotics that are banned in many countries. The method demonstrates a limit of quantitation as low as <0.05 µg kg^–1 in fortified crawfish meat for all four nitrofuran metabolites.
