Since 2004 the Büchi Young Scientists NIRAward has been given to young scientists who worked during their diploma or doctoral thesis in the field of near infrared spectroscopy and achieved outstanding results. In the past many excellent scientists from NIR research groups all over the world have received this award:
- 2009: Monica Casale from the University of Genoa, Italy
- 2008: André Krell Pedro from Unilever Brazil Ltda
- 2007: Steven M. Short from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA
- 2006: Dr Sumaporn Kasemsumran from the Kasetsart University, Bangkok and Professor Yiping Du from the East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China
This is just to name the latest.
Young scientists are encouraged to submit their research work on NIR spectroscopy. This application will be judged by an international jury of recognised experts:
- Professor Yukihiro Ozaki, Kwansei-Gakuin University, Kobe, Japan
- Professor Tony Moffat, The School of Pharmacy, London, UK
- Dr Mark Witkowski, US Food & Drug Administration, Columbus, USA
- Dr Gerry Downey, Teagasc - Ashtown Food Research Center, Dublin, Ireland
- Professor Marena Manley, Department of Food Science, Stellenbosch University, South Africa
The value of the award is US$2000.
Application for the Award is made by matching/providing all from the following list to the address below:
- Applicant is not over than 35 years old,
- A completed Application Form,
- A curriculum vitae and
- Evidence of the novelty and excellence of the work by either:
- A submission of up to 10 pages in English describing the work (this may include tables and figures), or
- A copy of a published paper which must not be older than two years at the date of application for the Award.
- Only one application per author is accepted,
- Papers can be submitted even if they have been previously published.

The deadline is 15 August of each year. The award winner is invited to present his/her scientific work to the audience of the international ICNIRS conference, NIR-2011, in South Africa.
