Advion has released the Open Port Sampling Interface, or OPSI, designed for simple sampling of solids, liquids, and sample preparation tips and fibres. This ambient sampling technique was invented by Gary van Berkel and Vilmos Ketesz of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. Paired with the electrospray ion source of the expression compact mass spectrometer, the OPSI uses an open port of continuous small-flowing volume of solvent directly into the mass spectrometer. Any soluble sample touching the port is analysed by the mass spectrometer in seconds. OPSI offers a fast assay benchtop solution for solid, liquids and surfaces in a small-footprint, easy-to-use system.
