Bruker to Acquire Veeco's Scanning Probe Microscopy and Optical Industrial Metrology Scientific Instruments Business

Bruker Corporation has signed an agreement to acquire the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) and Optical Industrial Metrology (OIM) instruments business from Veeco Instruments, Inc. for $229 million in cash. The transaction has been approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2010, pending regulatory review and subject to customary closing conditions.

Spectroscopy at the World Cup

World-Cup-NIR-2011-sDoping remains a problem throughout sport despite increases in technology to catch the cheats and increased sampling of competitors. At the World Cup, due to start on 11 June, two mass spectrometry companies are providing instrumentation for the anti-doping labs. AB Sciex is providing LC-MS/MS instrumentation and Agilent, GC/MS systems.

Shimadzu and bioMerieux enter into partnership for mass spectrometry applications in microbiology

Shimadzu and bioMerieux have entered into a partnership to commercialise a mass spectrometry system for bacterial identification in microbiology laboratories. bioMerieux will work with Shimadzu and their subsidiary, Kratos Analytical, to adapt their linear MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry technology for optimised integration into the microbiology laboratory workflow. This new solution is planned for commercialisation by bioMerieux in 2010, together with the microbial database acquired from AnagnosTec.

Global food safety response center

Thermo Fisher Scientific has opened a global food testing laboratory devoted to helping contain costly and life-threatening chemical contamination crises. The Food Safety Response Center, located in Dreieich, Germany, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by world-class chemists who will quickly mobilise to aid governments and businesses facing an unknown food safety threat involving chemical contaminants. One recent threat, the melamine crisis in China, claimed the lives of at least six children, made nearly 300,000 ill and cost companies worldwide billions before it was contained.

Activiomics signs commercial agreement with GSK

Scientists at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, have developed a novel mass spectrometry-method of analysing and interpreting cell signalling pathways. This technology enables the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry to identify biomarkers and better select new drugs for diseases such as cancer, autoimmunity and diabetes and help reduce their time to market.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and AIXUV has been relocated to the BEST operations in Bergisch Gladbach.
