Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for batteries

by Ian Michael

Metrohm Autolab and Arbin Instruments have jointly launched a new electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) system for battery testing. EIS can measure the state of charge and state of health of batteries, evaluate battery electrodes, electrolytes and separators, understand battery degradation mechanisms, study the interphase and SEI layer and measure the conductivity of electrolytes and separators. It combines a compact and lightweight Metrohm Autolab PGSTAT204 potentiostat/galvanostat, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy module (FRA32M) and an EIS Solution Cable that connects the PGSTAT204 with the Arbin battery cell tester. The system operates on a single software platform and automates EIS measurements across 1–32 channels with a frequency range of 10 µHz to 1 MHz.
